Gumi has developed and changed on the basis of a self-governing system, has become a strong and secure symbol for Korea, and has a significant role in North Gyeongsang Province. Gumi was awarded a Grand Prize for a Korean Self-governing Community supported by the Korean Efficiency Society in 1997, a Gold Prize for a World Self-governing Community supported by the Adenauer Foundation of Germany in 1998, and the 7th World Female Specialist Club BPW Gold Award in 2000. In 2001, Gumi was awarded the national Presidential Award in the area of developing small- and medium-sized businesses, and received the honor of being chosen as the best place to live in the nation by the Korean Efficiency Society.

In 2003, Gumi was awarded the grand prize as a "Company favorable city" and "Continuing city award," and in 2004 was awarded the grand award on National Productivity in the national productivity innovation contest and selected as a "superior organization improving productivity." In 2005, including the presidential award on local administration innovation evaluation, Gumi received awards in various fields and achieved the evaluation of the most advancing local autonomy.

In particular, Gumi was awarded the grand prize in development of the small- and medium-sized businesses as a self-governed local organization by the Korean Efficiency Society by scoring high in 21 categories evaluating its excellency. By winning 1st place, Gumi was able to proudly tell of its achievements and awards far and wide.

As the most advanced agricultural region and the largest inland electronic industrial complex in all of Korea, the city of Gumi expects to grow to hold a population of 500,000, increase production to 52 trillion won, and export a total of US $35 billion dollars by 2007. With all these achievements attained and goals set, the city of Gumi with its vibrancy and ability is ready to step on the worldwide stage with the major global players.

Gumi Tour

President Park Chunghee's Birth House Go to the homepage
Location : 171-3, Sangmo-dong Gumi-si Gyeongsangbuk-do

This house is where former President Park Chunghee was born and raised. It was built around 1900 and has soil walls covered with a straw roof. It is typical of small, traditional farm houses of the period, and is 15 pyeong (1 pyeong=3.3 sq. meters) in size. It and the surrounding area (228 pyeong total) were designated as Gyeongsangbuk-do Local Monument No. 86 in 1993.
President Park remains one of Korea's most influential leaders. He contributed much to the modernization of the nation and initiated the Saemaeul Movement.

Geumoh mountain was designated as national park in 1970.5.18 and one of the most beautiful mountains in province and whole country. There are many sites such as Daehae waterfall, doseon cave, yaksa rock and geumohji.

Dorisa Temple is originally built by Adohwasang, the transmitter of Buddhism to Synra Dynasty.
Many Buddhist towers and gravestones to memorize Adohwasang are located within the range.

There are 10 red clay houses and camp site, along with a large lake, enabling its people to enjoy their weekend trip to the Forest.

Bulguksa Temple Go to the homepage

• 10 min. by bus from Gyeongju National Museum

Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram, a stone shrine of Buddha, are well-known sightseeing attractions. Bulguksa was a temple originally built in 535 and is a testimony to both the skill of Shilla architects and the depth of Buddhist faith at the time. Seokguram consists of a central statue of Buddha gazing out over the forested hills across the East Sea to the horizon, surrounded by bodhisattvas and guardian deities. Both Bulguksa and Seokguram were added to UNESCO¡¯s World Cultural Heritage list.


Gyeongju National Museum Go to the homepage

This museum is a good place to start a Gyeongju tour. The museum preserves many artifacts from the Shilla Kingdom, including magnificent gold crowns, pottery, Buddhist decor and stone sculptures. It also houses the legendary Emille Bell, one of Asia's largest bells, which is 19 tons of pure bronze. The museum recently reopened its art gallery section and renovated its special exhibition rooms.

This resort is settled at the foot of an old fortress and is about 6.5km east of downtown Gyeongju. The resort contains many pleasure and convenience facilities including a convention center, shopping and dining, golf courses, an amusement park, and a casino. Shuttle buses and taxis run between downtown Gyeongju and the resort.
